There is a reason that Oral B electric toothbrushes are so popular; simply put, they clean really well. Today, we’re taking the Oral B Professional Care 1000 for a spin. Available for around £30 online, this one promises to be the brush to go for if you’d want to hurt your wallet too much in the process of keeping your teeth clean! But can it keep up with the big boys in terms of cleaning? Read on and find out.

The first thing that struck us about the brush, is that it includes Oral B’s patented 3D Cleaning technology.
oral b 1000 electric toothbrush handset

That’s the exact same technology that is packed into their top of the line brush so, for a fraction of the price, you can get the same quality teeth cleaning as the most advanced and expensive brushes on the market.

But what is 3D Cleaning?

Simply, it means that as well as oscillating back and forth 40,000 times per minute, the brush head on the 1000 also rotates 8,800 times per minute. This is actually a very important feature. Independent trials recently concluded that electric toothbrushes that rotate actually remove 10% more plaque than those that don’t.

So what’s in the box? Since the 1000 is something of a budget brush, it’s a basic package. Inside, you’ll get the handset, a free brush head, and the charging unit. Even though the package isn’t brimming with extras, Oral B have really got it right where it counts.

First off, the 1000 simply feels very sturdy and well constructed. It has that weight and solid feel that comes with good quality construction, without being too heavy or difficult to hold. In fact, the handset is slimmer than previous models meaning that it fits in the hand very snug, and is comfortable to operate.
On opening the box, we discovered an unexpected bonus. Inside, you’ll find a warranty booklet with a code that you can use to register the toothbrush online at Oral B’s website. If you do so, you’ll get an extra year’s warranty – that’s a total of 3 years manufacturer’s warranty! This makes the 1000 great value. You can be sure that it will be fully working for a full 3 years; a more than generous warranty period that beats other manufacturers hands down.

That’s not all though. The side of the box explains that the 1000 is included in Oral B’s “30 day challenge”. Essentially, the 30 day challenge is a money back guarantee. If you’re not satisfied with the brush for any reason what so ever, you can send it back to Oral for a full refund within 30 days of purchase.

With a 30 day money back guarantee, and 3 year warranty, this package represents value that is very hard to beat.

In terms of features, the Oral B 1000 isn’t gimmicky or difficult to use. It has one cleaning mode, the usual built in timers to advise you when the dentist-recommended brushing time is over, and a built-in pressure sensor. Separate LED lights on the handset advise you when the battery needs charging, and warn when you’re pressing too hard whilst brushing (so that you don’t damage the enamel on your teeth).

We found that Amazon.co.uk had the best prices on all electric toothbrushes, including the 1000 which is currently available for 50% off here.

Customer Reviews and Feedback

Since the Pro Care 1000 is such a best seller, there are hundreds of customer reviews and evaluations available online. It’s immediately obvious that customer satisfaction is very high with the brush, and in fact over 95% of customer reviews were very positive 4 or 5 star reviews.

Due to the included 3D Cleaning technology, the toothbrush gives an excellent quality clean according to the vast majority of reviewers. As we’ve found with higher-end models that use this technology, customers reported that after using the brush their teeth felt very smooth and clean, as did their entire mouth.

Our own experience with the brush confirms this, and the 1000 leaves the teeth with that smooth feeling that comes with top class plaque removal. At 40,000 strokes per minute, the brush is capable of delivering a full sonic experience, but is still gentle enough for those with sensitive teeth and gums. The brush heads are shaped in a way that make precision very easy, so you’re not going to cause any problems by accidentally passing it over your gums. Overall, a top quality clean, as you’d normally expect from an Oral B toothbrush.

“I would put this at the good, basic, workmanlike end of the market. I think reasonable value for money and it feels robust” Click here to read full review

Another point which came up often in reviews is that, for a cheaper electric toothbrush, its sturdy, and feels well made. That’s good peace of mind; as an item that gets used at least twice a day, the design needs to hold up to a lot of use. People also often mentioned that it was lightweight, and comfortable to use.

Again, we can confirm both of these points through our trials with the brush. You can’t tell from holding and using the 1000 that it is one of the cheaper brushes on the market, it is strong and sturdy, but at the same time comfortable to use. Oral B are clearly confident with the build quality too, and have put their money where their mouth is with the included 3 year warranty.

JPG Revington:

“Here are the results (June/July 2010):
* Before dental treatment and before electric: 75% bleeding + 65% plaque.
* Two weeks after treatment and using my Braun Oral-B electric: 12% bleeding + 10% plaque.
* Six weeks after a second treatment and still using electric: less than 2% bleeding + 1% plaque
* August 2010: no bleeding at all and less than 1% plaque.” Click here to see full review

There were hardly any negative comments, and we couldn’t find one person who has anything bad to say about its teeth cleaning prowess. One of the few negative comments was that the battery takes 17 hours to charge. However, as this one of the more affordable brushes on the market we feel it is reasonable that this compromise was made. Only brushes that cost over £80 usually have quick charging batteries. Also, the brush can easily be put on charge over night. We don’t feel that this is much of shortcoming, particularly in light of the value of the package overall. Indeed, most people who mentioned this added that they thought this shortcoming was acceptable given the price and good quality of the brush overall.

Overall, we’ve been suitably impressed with the Oral B Professional Care 1000. For a fraction of the price, you’re teeth are getting the same quality clean as they would from the top of the range brushes on the market. The quality and sturdiness of this toothbrush, included 3 year warranty and 30 day money back guarantee make this electric toothbrush probably the best value for money brush available. It’s not as feature-paced as more expensive brushes, but if you’re simply looking for a good quality toothbrush that gets the job done with a minimum of fuss, you can’t beat this brush for value. A well deserved 4 stars.
