The Sonicare DiamondClean HX9332 sonic toothbrush has been out on the market for time now, but its been miles off of most people’s radars due to the price. Well that’s finally starting to change; currently available for around 26% off, it is getting more and more affordable. Therefore, we thought it was about time to cast an eye over this new sonic toothbrush, and see what it has to offer.

We’ve got quite a lot to cover here! This toothbrush also packs in quite a lot of interesting new innovations, as well as the usual features you’d expect to see in an electric toothbrush. We’ll start with what is unique about this new toothbrush.

The toothbrush gets its name from the shape of its bristles, which of course are diamond-shaped. As well as adjusting the shape, Philips have also packed 44% more bristles onto the brush head. This combination means that the brush has quite a lot more surface area with which to sweep away plaque, and Philips say this means that it removes more plaque in hard to reach areas as a result.

The brush also has some really neat new charging features which have really got the attention of the gadget-lover in us! First off, it doesn’t come with the usual boxy white charger stand that you’ve come to expect with electric toothbrushes. It comes with a glass cup! It’s an ordinary glass cup, like you’d see in any bathroom, and indeed you can even fill it with water and use it to rinse! When you’re done brushing, you simply toss the brush into the cup and it begins to charge.

The glass cup charger isn’t magic. It uses the latest conduction technology to deliver a charge to the brush. It needs to sit on top of an induction plate, which is supplied in the box. The induction plate in turn plugs into the wall. It’s not quite wireless charging, but what it does mean is that you can take up the space on your bathroom shelf with something genuinely useful (everyone has a cup in the bathroom). It also frees you up from having a bulky plastic charger station hogging all the space on your bathroom shelf.

Another unique innovation packed into the package is the carry case. As with most high-end brushes, a hard carry case is included so that you can safely take the brush with you on your travels. But Philips have made this carry case much cooler. They’ve built in a USB port on the outside of the case! Drop in your toothbrush, hook the case up to your laptop with the supplied cable, and you can charge your toothbrush on the go. Anyone who has ever taken their toothbrush on holiday, only to have it accidentally turn on in their suitcase and drain the battery, will instantly see how useful this is! If you’re ever without a USB port to plug it into, it can be plugged into a standard 2 pin power socket too.

Finally, another new feature that Sonicare have brought to the table is exceptionally long battery life. Philips say that that the battery will last for up to three weeks on a single charge, which is clearly a big improvement on the usual 7 to 10 days you can usually expect a toothbrush to last. We’ll see what people say about the battery life later when we look at customer feedback, to see if the battery really does live up to these expectations.

As with all Sonicare brushes, this one is pretty powerful. It delivers 31,000 brush strokes per minute, driving fluid in-between the teeth and along the gum-line to get rid of even more plaque. Philips say that the technology in this thing has been backed by over 175 clinical trails, proving that it can make your teeth noticeable whiter in just a week and remove 100% more plaque than a manual toothbrush.

It has the usual array of timers built in; both a two minute timer to let you know when you can stop brushing, and quad-pacer timer which indicates when you should switch to another area of the mouth. Cleverly, though, the timers don’t reset when you turn the brush off. This means that if you get interrupted whilst brushing, the timers will remember where they were and carry on where they left off. If left off for 45 seconds, they will reset.

Five brushing modes (clean, sensitive, gum care, white, and polish), and a two year manufacturers warranty round off what I must say is a feature packed box!

We found that most electric toothbrushes are cheapest at Amazon.co.uk, including the DiamondClean which is currently available for 29% off.

Customer Feedback and Reviews

As a relatively new brush, there are not a huge amount of customer testimonials for the Sonicare DiamondClean at the moment. However, what feedback is available is encouragingly good; in fact of all the customer reviews and ratings available online, they are almost exclusively positive. The vast majority of customers have rated the toothbrush with 5 stars, with a few opting for 4 or 3 star reviews. There are no negative reviews at all, so early signs are very positive indeed!

First things first, almost everybody was extremely impressed with the cleaning that the toothbrush gave them. There were three main types of people; some who came to this brush from a manual brush, some who swapped from older Sonicare brushes, and a few coming from an Oral B brush. All of them were impressed, with several people mentioning that they could literally see the difference in the whiteness of their teeth. It seems that this toothbrush whitens and polishes superbly. “I wouldn’t go back” was a comment made on several occasions.

“I have been a Braun fan for about 10 years… I have no intention of ever switching back.” Click here to read full review

Although it’s not directly related to oral health, pretty much every customer who reviewed the brush was very impressed with its looks. This is the definitely the most attractive and stylish toothbrush ever made; it’s slender and lightweight making it easier to hold, and has a striking and elegant design. The emphasis on stylish design might not mean much to your dentist, but I think it goes to show that Philips have really invested a lot of time in this brush. I think it’s going to be their flagship toothbrush for some time to come – when it comes down a bit more in price, I’m sure we’re going to see this brush flying off the shelves.

“All in all in use it provides excellent cleaning in each of the modes and leaves the mouth and gums feeling zingy and clean , would hightly recommend it. Both my husband and I are much impressed and this will be our toothbrush of choice from now on” Click here to read full review

I have to admit, I was pretty impressed with the glass charging cup when I first heard about it, and in every day use customers seems to love it. It’s another thing that was commonly mentioned as a plus point, and people really did find it added to the convenience of using an electric toothbrush. Whilst the glass cup charger is striking, yet practical, several people also really liked the carry case charger (presumably they were frequent travelers).

The new innovations in the package were all met with a lot of enthusiasm, but that shouldn’t override the cleaning prowess of this toothbrush; almost all customers who reviewed the product we’re extremely enthusiastic about the ability of this toothbrush to clean the teeth.

“I have been using electric toothbrushes for more than 10 years. I was not expecting to clean any better than other brands/models but I was wrong. Although I’ve been using it only for few days so far, the sensation of cleanliness is way better than any toothbrushes I’ve used so far” Click here to read full review

Overall, the negative comments were very few and far between. One small niggling complaint was the lack of coloured markers for the brush heads. Oral B brush heads come with small interchangeable rings which are used to colour code you brush heads for each family member. This brush, unfortunately, has no equivalent system so you’ll need to come up with your own system if you want to share the unit with other members of the family. It’s not a deal breaker thats for sure, but it would definitely be nice to have.

Another, extremely minor complaint, was that the toothbrush can’t be used in the shower. To be honest, I’d never heard of anybody brushing their teeth in the shower, but one reviewer said that she did like to do that so it might be worth mentioning here. I’m not going to hold this one against the brush when scoring; I really don’t think many people are looking for a brush they can use in the shower!

I’ve always been a fan of Sonicare brushes, but for me Oral B has had the edge. That gap has just closed thanks to this great brush. It’s innovative in a useful way that improves the user’s experience, it’s probably the best designed electric toothbrush ever released, and it cleans very well. An Oral B brush probably removes around 10% more plaque with its rotating action, but in terms of whitening and stain removal the winner is very much Sonicare; I’m very tempted to say that I have a new favourite toothbrush!

The Sonicare DiamondClean is a very capable toothbrush – it’s important to remember that an Oral B toothbrush will remove 10% more plaque due to it’s rotating action. However, this brush is no slouch at removing plaque, and whitens and polishes teeth very well to boot. If whitening is your goal and you like the innovative features, then I’d say go for it. It is a really good toothbrush. It’s getting 4.5 stars from us.

The Good
  • Beautiful minimal design and thoughtful ergonomics make it very easy to hold (and nice to look at)
  • Genuinely useful innovations – people particularly like the glass cup charger
  • Longest lasting battery of any toothbrush on the market
  • Handy USB travel charger – the best toothbrush for travellers
  • Cleans teeth very well – most customer reviews mentioned noticeably whiter teeth
  • Definitely the best Sonicare toothbrush yet
The Bad
  • No colour coding for the brush heads
  • Can’t be used in the shower (probably won’t bother 99% of people!)
